Medical Insurance Advice

It is advisable to have International Health Insurance while traveling to or living in Mexico.  Having an International Health Plan gives a person, family or group a variety of choices when it comes to health care. For example, a person covered by an International Health Plan can choose a private hospital or any approved physician for their care.  If a person is living between Mexico and their country of citizenship, an Intl. Insurance Healthcare Policy will cover them in both countries and even Worldwide, for a choice of policy limits that range from $50,000 US to as much as $8,000,000 US.  Not having appropriate international health coverage might expose one or one's family to a significant financial liability and impede appropriate care, or to the family. Some things to consider:

Short Term International Health Plans : Can cover a person for as little as 5 days up to 3 years outside their home country.  Visit  www.azseguro.com  and review the policy benefits there. If a person lives permanently outside their home country or for the majority of the year,  see International Major Medical Plans below.

International Major Medical Plans: These plans can cover a person for a lifetime if they are living in Mexico or any latin america country, and can cover them for limited stays in their home country too. Policies are renewable. These plans and the short-term plans cover costs of Hospital & Doctors, Medicine, Local & Air Ambulance, Reunion of Family Members, and offer 24hr a day, 7 days a week support. There are more benefits than what is mentioned. and Life Insurance Options For Expatriates, Visitors & Retirees Heading To Mexico & Latin America

People Staying In Mexico Less Than 6 Months Per Year

- If a person has Medicare or is un-insured, such a person might need pay out of pocket for their chronic treatments in Mexico and some individuals purchase a medical air evacuation policy. Most medical air evacuation-only plans have a 90 waiting period on pre-existing medical conditions, with no medical coverage. Some individuals are convinced that if they become seriously ill, they will buy a plane ticket and return to the USA to utilize their Medicare benefits.
We convey to them that there is a significant financial risk here.  Mexico private hospitals usually require payment for medical services rendered before allowing a foreign patient  to leave the hospital, unless the foreign patient’s insurer will issue a guarantee of payment letter. For some, these medical bills can be significant.

- There are short-term international medical policies such as the Multinational Underwriters Atlas plan by Lloyds of London. There are no medical underwriting questions, and the Atlas plan covers sudden, unexpected and unforeseen medical expenses outside of the person’s home country of citizenship. These policies are renewable from as little as 5 days for up to 36 months, Range of coverage amount is $50,000 to $1,000,000 Dlls. Coverage up to age 75 and beyond. Generally there are limits to coverage of pre-existing medical conditions. Chronic treatments are not covered. Visit  www.azseguro.com

People Staying In Mexico More Than 6 Months Per Year (Residing)

- There are International Major Medical policies from insurer BUPA Group (British United Provident Association).  BupaCare’s plans allow a person to apply up to a maximum age of 74. The decision to accept an applicant is made by a medical risk underwriter. BUPA Group has a subsidiary insurer called IHI Danmark.  Their  IHI Superior Plan has the best benefits I’ve ever seen on any health plan, anywhere and people can apply up to age 80 years. There is no deductible, and virtually everything Medical, Dental & Vision related is covered at 100%. There are no exclusions for hazardous sports or activities of any kind on any of the BUPA plans.  More about these plans can be obtained from us.

- Multinational Underwriters has two international major medical plans, called the CitizenSecure and CitizenSecure Economy. Both plans cover worldwide and give options to include or exclude USA and Canada. The coverage maximum is $5 Million Dlls. Maximum age to apply is 74 years old.

If they apply before age 65, they can have lifetime coverage.  If they apply between the ages of 65 and 74, the policy will end at age 75. Visit  www.azseguro.com

- There are short-term international medical policies such as the Multinational Underwriters Atlas plan, usually someone buying this might maintain a major medical policy in their home country of citizenship.

- Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social or IMSS, the Government Social Medical Program will not cover chronic treatments for new applicants with resident visas.

Special Note: Those Under Age 65 who are US Citizens, Residing In Mexico

- Usually people in this age class hold a US Domestic health policy or have COBRA benefits from a former employer. They may maintain their exiting policies and some return to the USA for treatments of their chronic medical conditions. Or they may pay medical expenses in Mexico, which are usually at a lower out-of-pocket cost.   People considered un-insurable and without medical benefits might purchase a medical air evacuation policy.  These policies can be found at www.azseguro.com   Those individuals considered to be in the un-insurable risk class are sometimes afraid to move from the United States or Canada for fear of being unable to secure medical coverage in Mexico. Some individuals in this class have decided the benefits of living in Americanized Communities in Mexico outweigh the risks and move to Mexico anyway.

Unexpected, Unforeseen Illness, Injury or Catastrophic Medical Event

- If a person has Medicare, they might pay out of pocket for their unexpected, unforeseen illness or injury in Mexico and some individuals purchase a medical air evacuation policy.

- There are short-term international medical policies and international major medical policies to cover such events.

Company Employer International Group Medical Plans

International Group Medical Plans can range in size from two employees and beyond. No size limit.  These plans can be custom designed with ease, based on the employers needs. Rates are usually lower than domestic USA group plans, and a group can be a mixture of people of any citizenship.   Contact us about these.

Preventative Healthcare Benefits

Preventative Examinations have an important purpose. These examinations might detect a medical condition in the early stages before it grows and gains momentum. Traditional domestic USA health insurance plans may have Wellness benefits in the USA but the member usually cannot take advantage of these Wellness (health checkup) benefits in Mexico. International Medical Insurance Carriers usually have limited dollar amounts, which can be used for routine health check up exams. This might be a disappointment to someone holding an international health policy that may be accustomed to the rich wellness benefits of a USA Domestic Health Insurer. Medicare and Medicaid covered individuals could benefit from an International Medical Insurance policy or Stand-Alone Wellness Benefit plan since USA government health plans do not cover Mexico.

Long Term Care Insurance

There are insurers offering Long Term Care Benefits. The benefits can be used to pay expenses in Mexico for someone who can not perform at  least four of the six Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) without assistance.

International Life Insurance

Why Life Insurance? The main purpose of life insurance is to guarantee a finance lender will be repaid on your vacation property loan, a business loan or to provide cash to your family or business partners after you die. The money your dependents will receive (the "death benefit") is an important financial resource: It can help pay the mortgage, run the household, and ensure that your dependents aren't burdened with debt. The proceeds from a life insurance policy could mean that they won't have to sell assets, homes, or rob retirement plans to pay outstanding bills or taxes. What's more, there is usually no federal income tax on life insurance benefits. Benefits will be paid in real US Dollars. Life Insurance is a tool to protect partners who are in business together. Disability Income Protection is an option which can be added to International Life Insurance policies.
